The little Casa Volpi (tel. 0575 35 43 64; www.casavolpi.it; Via Simone Martini 29; closed  Wed and some days Aug and 23rd Dec-2nd Jan) serves regional cuisine in the evenings with the exception of Sundays.

After its recent restoration, fine Le Anfore (tel. 0575 98 40 66;  www.etruscohotel.it; Via Fleming 39 I; closed Sun and 25th Jul-25th Aug) has fortunately opened again to serve its classic cuisine - open only for dinner.

To get a good taste of Tuscan cuisine head for Badia di Pomaio (tel. 0575 371 14 07; www.badiadipomaio.it; località Badia di Pomaio 1) which can be found in charmingly restored cellars.

La Lancia d'Oro (tel. 0575 21033; www.loggevassari.it;  Piazza Grande 18-19 I; closed 5th-25th Nov, Sun Jul-Aug, Mon rest of the year) boasts a magnificent location in the Vasari loggia. From here diners can watch the buzzing activity in the square where historical re-enactments often take place. Traditional Tuscan menu.

Le Chiavi d'Oro (tel. 0575 40 33 13; www.ristorantelichiavidoro.it; Piazza San Francesco 7 I; closed 7 days February and 7 days July and Mon) prepares local  cuisine with an innovative touch. It has been designed with an authentic décor and you can enjoy watching the chefs at work in the kitchen through the glass wall separating it from the dining room.

Antica Osteria l'Angania (tel. 0575 29 53 81; www.agania.com; Via Mazzini 10 I; closed Mon) serves hearty homemade cuisine.

Minerva ( tel. 0575 37 03 90; www.hotel-monerva.it; Via florentina 4 I, closed 1st - 20th Aug) provides a relaxing and well lit atmosphere to accompany its classic dishes.

With its great position looking onto the Piazza Grande Campagni di Merende (tel. 0575 182 23 68; Logge Vasari 16) is a great choice for a restorative glass of wine and some nibbles.

Vita Bella (Piazza Francesco 22) can be found opposite the Church of Saint Francis. Another great place for people-watching over a drink.

Enjoy a delicious pizza at Crispi’s (tel. 0575 2 28 73; Via Francesco Crispi 10-12), then stay around as the place transforms into a bar popular among youngsters.
