Captivating Pontremoli, located on the Via Francigena, combines cobbled piazzas surrounded by colonnades where people like to sit at a bar or café and observe the passeggiata, and shops with a ancient flavour selling local produce. Enhancing the old style even further, Pontremoli abounds in shops selling 50s design clothes.
At first the town took the form of a long shape squeezed between two rivers: the Magra and the Verde. They protected the town from enemies and therefore, Pontremoli played a key role as people and goods that went from north to centre of the country had to enter the town. It was in the 17th century when it really flourished and its ravishing stately residences were built.
