This town of over 34,000 inhabitants was already a port in the Roman Empire. It suffered severe damage during WWII. Yet, there are still traces of some walls in the centre of the town and a  visit to the Torrione Rivellino (Picture 3) dating back to the 1400s and the port are certainly worth it.

The Museo Archelogico del Territorio di Populonia will be very helpful (tel.0565 22 16 46; www.parchivaldicornia.it;  Piazza Cittadella 8) to gain more insight into the original culturer and day-to-day-life here.
