This little island of approximately 6 x 5km forms part of the Parco Nazionale dell’Archipelago Toscano. The other islands included in the park are Capraia, Gorgona, Giglio, Giannutri, Elba and Montecristo, the uninhabited island made known by Alexander Dumas in his book the Count of Montecristo.
Pianosa however, is a triangular shaped island and until not too long ago was actually used as a place of banishment for criminals over about 150 years.
