Near to Marciana Marina are sandy beaches on the Golfo della Biodola that deserve mention. However, this town offers a different style with attractive pebble beaches and a rich history.
Marciana Marina is located 20 km from Portoferraio.
Marciana is located 355m above sea level reaching the highest position on the island and thus has the best views. It has plenty of charming character with little stairways, arches, flowers and balconies Its character is given by stairways, arches, flower pots and little balconies.
The Fortezza Pisana (open Apr-Oct) was built in the Middle Ages. At a lower level there is simple archaeological museum (tel.0565 90 12 15; Via del Pretorio, closed Tue).
Another sight is located on the outskirts: the 11th century Santuario della Madonna del Monte which attracts pilgrims from all over the island. There is a stone here which bears the imprint of a figure thought to be the Virgin Mary.
The cable car located less than a kilometre away from Marciana (tel. 0565 90 10 20) and operating from Easter to November ascends to Monte Capanne over 1000m high, from where, in fine weather you can even see Corsica.
Along the coast which runs parallel to a road heading west from Marcian are a whole range of beaches to suit your preferences, including Spiaggia delle Tombe and Le Piscine, both nudist beaches.
