By bus: to Saline (duration:20 minutes). There you can take a
bus to Pisa or Cecina. Tickets are available at the tobacconist’s
(cheaper) or on the bus itself.
From Volterra to Colle di Val’d Elsa (services: 4 a day), but Sundays change. For San Gimignano (duration: 1 ½ hours), to Siena (duration: 1 ½ hours), to Florence (duration: 2 hours). There is a direct but not frequent service to Florence.
To Pomarance (services: 12 a day) and to Castelnuovo di Valle di Cecina (services: 10 a day).
By car: the SS68 connecting Cenina and Colle di Val d’Elsa is the road by which you both arrive in and leave Volterra.
There are some signposted secondary roads to San Gimignano.
Driving and parking in the walled section of Volterra is prohibited. Parking, generally free of charge, is permitted around the walls. Underneath Piazza Martiri della Libertà you can leave your car in the car park for a fee.
By train: There is a railway station in Saline. The train to Cecina leaving from Saline’s railway station connects to Rome or Pisa.
